Newt Surveys

We carry out newt surveys to check for the presence of great crested newts and support projects through planning, licensing, and mitigation.

We offer great crested newt surveys to help determine whether newts are present on a site and how a proposed project might affect them. Surveys may be needed to support a planning application, or to inform a mitigation licence if newts are likely to be impacted.

Depending on the time of year and the site, we carry out habitat suitability assessments, eDNA sampling, and/or traditional presence/absence surveys followed by population assessments. We provide clear advice on next steps, including mitigation, licensing routes, and timing.

Our approach aims to minimise delays and maximise outcomes for both wildlife and projects. We can also help design habitat enhancements or contribute to District Level Licensing schemes where appropriate.

Our newt survey service involves:

• Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) assessments to evaluate ponds and terrestrial habitat
• eDNA sampling and traditional torch, netting, and bottle-trap surveys
• Guidance on licensing routes, including District Level Licensing
• Reporting and mitigation advice to support planning and conservation.
